Conditional compilation allows you to mark a section of source code to be either compiled or skipped, depending on whether a particular compilation symbol is defined. There are four directives for specifying conditional compilation: #if #else #elif #endif A condition is a simple expression that returns either true or false. A condition can consist of a single compilation symbol or an expression of symbols and operators, as summarized in Table 23-2. Subexpressions can be grouped with parentheses. The literals true and false can also be used in conditional expressions.

To lay out a window on the screen, Windows must make an assumption of how many dots (or pixels) per inch (dpi) a screen has. In the past, most monitors had 96 pixels per inch. Some, however, could have up to 120. Windows has a setting called Font Size, which allows the user to set the value to 96 dpi, to 120 dpi, or to a custom value. On Windows Vista, the option is called DPI scaling. Previous programming frameworks used pixels as the unit of length. Programmers generally assumed that systems would have 96 pixels per inch and coded accordingly. But if the user changed their Font Size setting from 96 dpi to 120 dpi, there were interesting consequences: Things that were 1 inch long at 96 dpi (that is, 96 pixels long) became only 0.8 inches long at 120 dpi because the 96 pixels were closer together. Although fonts were scaled uniformly, other components of the window were not, resulting in odd-looking and sometimes unusable screens.

The #if and #endif directives are the matching demarcations of a conditional compilation construct. Whenever there is an #if directive, there must also be a matching #endif. Figure 23-1 illustrates the #if and #if...#else constructs. If the condition in the #if construct evaluates to true, the code section following it is compiled. Otherwise, it is skipped. In the #if...#else construct, if the condition evaluates to true, CodeSection1 is compiled. Otherwise, CodeSection2 is compiled.

Even if you have no experience of the Australian emigration process you can probably gain an understanding from Figure 6-1. Windows Workflow enables you to design and develop your application in a similar visual manner. Consider how an application to handle such a process would be coded: it would probably be difficult to gain an understanding at a glance. Figure 6-2 shows a possible WF implementation of the process.
